Would a thyroidectomy resolve the problems I have due to my hypothyroidism?
sapphire_eyes asked:
For many years I have had extreme problems due to my hypothyroidism. I have dark course hair on my face, stomach, back, buttock, and legs(I am female so this is not normal.) I also get hot flashes, overactive sweating, extreme weight loss and weight gain. I have been on Synthroid medication int he past and this hasn’t helped wtih any of these things. Would a thyroidectomy solve these problems for me?

No, Hypo means to little, if you remove it there will be none.

NO, I have hypothyroidism, not to the extremes like you, but you need to see and Endocrinologist. Your hormones sound way out of balance. So before you make a decision that cannot be reversed, seek out another doctor and get more than one opinion. I believe the Endocrinologist should be your first step. Good luck.

Well, I had a thyroidectomy and I have the worst sweating, hot flashes, weight gain, and heat insinsitivity and night sweats. They say it might be from my Synthroid (the heat problems – not the weight gain).
My friend had her thyroid ablated with Radioactive Iodine (you can look up Iodine 131 for more info). She has to be on Synthroid still, but honestly, it’s much easier to get it at a regular dose than when she still had her thyroid. When she still had her thyroid they were constantly having to change her meds because her thyroid would kick in and then the medicine would be too high, or the thyroid would stop working so well and she would have to go to a higher dose.
I can tell you that probably not all of your problems will be helped by either method (thyroidectomy or ablation) – but it may help some. I feel like my medicines just don’t do enough, even though my levels are “perfect” – I just don’t think medicine can ever replace what your body does naturally.

Hypothyroidism is due to an under-active thyroid, sometimes as a result of a thyroidectomy.
A thyroidectomy removes part or all of your thyroid and would be of no assistance in your case.
You say you have been on Synthroid in the past, which implies you are no longer taking it.
If you are Hypothyroid, you will need to take some form of thyroxine substitute for the rest of your life.
See your Dr and get your medications sorted out before problems become irreversible.
