The stray cat ive been taking care of has sores, hair loss and is very skinny?! PLEASE HELP ME?
EMD asked:
Ive been feeding a stray cat as its been roaming the neighbourhood, he has spent a few nights sleeping in my house. The cat has always had horrible knots on her fur and recently a lot of the knots have been falling off. Leaving the whole body of the cat (excluding the legs and head) hairless. She has been eating a lot, ive feed her daily for 3 weeks. But she is still very skinny. Tonight i noticed a small hole under her arm, with is a bit swollen also. The area is also red, ive been told by surrounding neighbours the cat is female. This stray is not feral, it is a very sweet and loving cat, although it is very timid of other cats. It seems that other cats in the neighbourhood may be intimidating the cat. But the wound under her arm doesnt appear like an area another cat could claw, and this wound is a hole in the skin? If anyone has any idea what I can do or what this may be please help me

Take this cat to the vet. Don’t let her near any of your own cats, btw, because who knows, it could be catching.
The vet may let you work out some kind of a payment arrangement, if you need it.
Thanks for caring about stray cats. You sound like a very good person to me.

It probably has worms of some sort, parasites. Do not let it come in contact with the other cats, if possible.
Take it to a vet asap, so it can get the necessary shots, etc.

There’s a lot going on if that much fur is falling out, you need her evaluated by a vet to see if it’s skin mites (treatable). The hole is probably from a bite which is abscessing. Also something he should look at. Take in a poop sample also, so they can see if there’s worms that need to be treated for as well.
Keep feeding her, but have the vet do a checkup on the cat for sure–skin mites can be identified under a microscope, it’s a quick check they can do. I think her current state definately needs to be professionally evaluated. You’d be looking at the cost of an office visit ($35 here), a poo evaluation ($8) and possibly deworming. The check for mites will be free, part of the exam.

This cat needs to be taken to the vet. The hair loss could be related to fleas or some other skin condition. Sounds like it might have an infected area, but who knows what has caused it. Probably has worms and that is why it is not gaining weight. Sounds like this cat has had a hard life, please give it some help.

I also recommend to take her to the vet. Vets might be closed for 4th of July (if in US) but some might be opened for emergency. Check your phone directory.
Once my professor picked up a stray dog getting hairless. He told me after the visiting to the vet he has a skin disease and it is not recoverable. If found earlier it could have been treated but too late. For cats, I once read when stressed they loss patches of hair. I donno but the hole could have been infected so I would clean the wounds with hydrogen peroxide.
Good luck with your kitty.

From your description this cat is very ill. IF you are willing and able to spend the money needed to take her to the vet, great, but the vet may tell you he can treat her or may give you bad news, call animal control. I am not being cruel, just realistic. I love cats and it breaks my heart to see one in such bad shape, especially one who was obvioulsy someones pet once. Do what your heart tells you, but remember it is not fair to make any animal suffer.

i think its nice that you are taking care of this cat, and it sounds like its really sick! If the cat letts you pether and hold her you can either try to wrap her up in a towel or put her ina box and drive her to the pet hospital, but make sure taht the cat feels comfertable with you holding her otherwise sshe might bight you!!! thats waht i would do! good luck

I would have to say that a medical examination on this cat is needed real soon. From the sounds of the condition of this cat it really needs to be checked out. It is kind of difficult to say what is really wrong with this cat without being able to actually see it. So, I’d just go with the other answers and say get this cat checked out as soon as you can.
