It is easier to prevent the aging and falling out of healthy hairs than to regrow hair in follicles that are already dormant. Finasteride (marketed in the U.S. as Propecia) and minoxidil (marketed in the U.S. as Rogaine, and some places as Regaine) have shown some success in partially reversing loss. In a one one-year study of finesteride, evaluation after one year showed five of 21 subjects (23.8%) had two-grade improvement in MNHS grade on a modified Norwood/Hamilton scale and 12 of 21 subjects (57.1%) had one-grade improvement; the others remained at the same grade. However such treatments are generally ineffective at treating extreme cases of hair loss.

i can tell you what i've been through taking methimazole.

i was taking 10 mg once a day, and some hair did fall out from the sudden change in hormones.

soon after that i went to 5 mg once a day. eventually, 2.5 mg for many months. i missed a few appointments and stayed on the meds too long.

had a rash from the meds, and my glucose was elevated, but now i'm off the meds and everything is normal again.

i'm in remission and feel much better. i did refuse the RAI, and i'm glad i did.

the doctor said my thyroid would most likely just burn itself out. the person who cuts my hair said that i'm having hair growth again! good thing.

i still can't exercise the way i use too. my muscles are different and weaker. i take walks and lift light weights.

I know from experience your hair will fall out with hyperthyroid.
I used to have a hyperthyroid. Then had radiation therapy and now I am hypothyroid. Best advice I can give you, take your meds as prescribed and keep up with your blood-work. Once your thyroid gets back to normal, providing the medication your physician put you on works for you, your hair should stop falling out. Once your thyroid is in the norm again and your hair still falls out, then you will know it is due to the medication. I wish you luck, I know it can be frustrating, but only time will tell. Give it a chance.

If you cannot control your thyroid with medication, then I would recommend radiation. It's been about 20 yrs since I had it done, but it came in the form of a capsule. I preferred the radiation over surgery, due to the fact I was told if they didn't take enough of my thyroid during surgery they would have to go back in and take more. My other alternative was to take the radiation and if not given enough on the first dose, they would have to repeat it. More simplistic than surgery to day the least. (my opinion anyway) Needless to say, they gave me a bit too much and now I have to take synthroid every day. I've done really well with it and have continued through the years on a low dose.
If you decide to take either route, you will have to see an endocrinologist. Best Of Luck!

Peppermint, I'm curious as to what you mean by being in remission. (i've had a thyroid condition for 30 yrs, no such thing as remission) First and foremost the thyroid produces hormones. A change in the thyroid can make a person lose hair. That's definitely a given for anyone with an over active thyroid. I've never been on Tapazole so I can't say one way or another, but curious to say the least. Have you ever been tested for Lupus?
