PCOS (women only please!)?
miss_playa6935 asked:
Im only 15 years old but I have not started my period yet, I have some of the symptoms that I have researched on PCOS, like I get boils around my private (not stds), underarms, neck, Hair loss, excessive body hair, acne, irregular period or not one at all, and overweight. My sister also had irregular period and had to be put on birth control. I dont know how to tell my mom to take me to the doctor because i am very embarassed about it. I also dont want to see my doctor because he knows my family well and my aunt works with him so she can find out everything about me and my diagnosis, and Im afraid ill have to take my panties off and show the doctor my problems down there! I know I would be more comfortable with someone I dont know and maybe a female doctor but again im embarassed. What kind of test would they run? I know that they have to check your vagina and everything but im a virgin so im scared about that, well any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!
What kind of doctor should I see?

You need to see a doctor. I can understand why you would not want to go to the family doctor, since he is close with the family and this would be very embarrassing to you.
Talk with your mother, explain to her exactly what you have written here. Perhaps she could take you to a female gynecologist. You could discuss with the doctor your modesty and embarrassment, and I am sure she would explain exactly what sort of examination she would need to do, and what sort of tests would be indicated. Explain that you are a virgin and are concerned about any examination. I know she will put your mind at ease.
Honey, I remember being your age, and not even wanting our doctor to listen to my heart.
You can probably have your mother in the room with you during the examination, which may be comforting to you.
Good luck.

I remember feeling the way that you are feeling. I felt embarrassed to see the doctor, too. I had my first surgery when I was 14 yrs. old because of PCOS (I was a virgin, too)…so I totally understand your anxiety.
In your case, maybe what you could do is just copy/paste what you wrote here and email it to your mom or maybe even print it out and give it to her.
She can help you find a different doctor – a female one, if you prefer. The tests they’d do really depends. Am sure they’d definitely want to do some blood work on you and yes, there would be the dreaded physical exam, but gynos do this for a living and most try to make you as comfortable as possible. You can even have your mom there with you, if you want – or the nurses will talk to you to distract you from the exam.
In your situation, most likely what is happening is a whole bunch of hormone issues going on. You’ve not gotten your period yet, for one, so I think that has something to do with it. but you really need an exam and some blood work, done by a doctor to be sure of what is going on….if anything.
Most likely; you are probably a very normal girl…maybe with a bit of hormone imbalance, but very, very normal.
You will be just fine.

Hi, sweetie… I have PCOS. There is absolutely nothing to be embarassed about. People can’t tell that you are a virgin by looking at you, and most physicians can’t even tell by a vaginal exam. As to what doctor you see, that is complicated. Most insurances won’t cover an OBGYN until you are 17 or 18. They would suggest seeing an Internal Medicine doctor, who would refer run a few basic blood tests (more than likely, there would be no vaginal exam or a brief exam – nothing to worry about – it isn’t painful and you can ask for a female doctor. A nurse is also there the entire time. The hardest part is learning to relax your legs. The more uptight you feel, the tighter your muscles will be and the more discomfort you will feel. They will apply some lubricant to the speculum, but it will feel cold and you will feel slight pressure. If it is painful let the doctor know immediately. They can switch to a smaller speculum or otherwise accomodate you.). After the blood tests, they would then determine if it appears your hormones may be of balance which could suggest PCOS. If that is the case, they would refer you to an OBGYN for further testing. Some OBGYN’s can treat mild PCOS symptoms. Usually, they will prescribe birth control pills. Not to worry – this doesn’t mean you are not a virgin or that people will look at you differently. It is a medical need. The birth control pills have hormones in them that will either regulate your period if you have one, or cause you to have a period. If your symptoms are a little more, they may prescribe Metformin or Glucophage. These are common meds and nothing to be scared about. They are typically prescribed to people with diabetes or any type of insulin resistance. The birth control pills help with the excessive hair, periods, and even weight gain. The Metformin helps with the weight gain and possibly infertility if you were planning a pregnancy as an adult. They also may change your diet slightly to cut out as many refined foods (doughnuts, bread, pasta) as you can live with, and increase your protein. I think it is amazing that you have researched all of this and I am sure your mom would be proud of you. I encourage you to talk to her about it – open the lines of communication. Once you turn 18 or so, you will be going to the OBGYN at least once a year. After a few visits, it’s nothing and you will get used to it and look back a this experience and laugh at how nervous you were. It’s normally to feel scared, but I promise, it is nothing to worry about it. Do it now to get your symptoms under control. Good luck, sweetie!
