My labs have me confused, anyone good at reading them?

USAF_Wife asked:

I’ve been really sick. i’m a 23 year old female. My symptoms are extreme fatigue, muscle and joint paint.. even pain in my bones. Muscles getting rapidly weaker as time goes by. My hair is falling out.. loss of appetite…fevers between 99.9-101 on and off. These symptoms have been going on for a year now but have only gotten worse over time. My doctor thought it could be lupus but my ana and rheumatoid factor returned normal. Here are my abnormal labs. I have an appointment with my doctor again in 2 weeks.. he’s a really busy guy but I’ve been dealing with this for a while and I’m wondering.. if not Lupus what can this be? Looking for any possibilities related to what my labs look like. Yes I’m aware that you are probably not a doctor but I’m just curious since I’m horrible at looking this stuff up lol.
wbc H 13.0 range listed is 3.60-11
neut# H 8.05 range listed is1.30-7.40
lymph# H 4.15 range listed 0.70-3.70
C reactive Prot H 1.45 range listed is 0.01-0.82
Glucose H 111 range listed 70-110
ESR H 28 range listed 0-20
@Grac I’m not on steroids. Not on any meds in fact.
@chem thanks for the detailed information. I do know what the first three tests are. I guess what I’m trying to ask is are there any disease/conditions related to my labs/symptoms that any of you know of?
@sofia I hope you find out what’s wrong and feel better too :( It’s really no fun at all..
@sorry I don’t have any stomach related issues :( I’d say that’s the one part of me that ‘seems’ fine besides my appetite diminishing. My thyroid is fine, I get those levels checked every 6 months or so because a few in my family have thyroid issues, but they ARE in fact in normal range. I just posted the abnormal readings on my labs. Thanks for your answer. Do you know if there are any more possible diseases/conditions related to the symptoms/labs? Or are there too many to really list? Again thanks for your answer!

well your C reactive protein and ESR are high, which tend to indicate some level of inflammation in your body. From what, well that’s unknown, and up to your doc to figure out.
that’s probably also why your WBCs are up, unless you are also on steroids.

CRP is high in infections, heart disease or obesity. most of the times, the doctors look at infection as being the most probable cause.
ESR is Eryhtocyte Sedimentation Rate. it’s high in acute and chronic inflammations, including autoimmune diseases, that’s why your doctor had to rule out lupus and rheumathoid arthritis (the most common autoimmune diseases).
Glucose yes, could be high if you took steroids and those could cause your immune system to further suffer, that’s why the other person asked you about that. however, in that facility 110 is considered high and even though i learned that 100-124mg/dL means that you are a pre-diabetic, it could be the stress of the procedures or the consequence of a high carb meal that you just had.
i am pretty sure you understand the first three lab results, or you can look them up if you wish. i just wanted to give you a little insight on these last ones.

Are you having diarrhea, rectal pain associated with chronic tears or anal abscesses? These are signs of Crohn’s disease which is also an auto immune disease. Crohn’s disease is inflammation of the small intestines or colon. It usually presents in the teens and early 20s. The hair loss sounds like a symptom of thyroid disease, but I don’t see the TSH, so it looks like he hasn’t checked it. Good luck hun I hope you get better!

A magnesium deficiency causes insulin to function poorly, resulting in high blood sugar. High glucose levels also cause magnesium to be flushed from the body. Magnesium deficiency is signficantly linked to insulin resistance, pre diabetes and diabetes. Magnesium deficiency symptoms are many but include extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain (can be misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia), hair loss, loss of appetite, fevers, increased white blood count and elevated CRP. Magnesium converts vitamin D to its active form. In one study, 93% of patients with unexplained muscle and bone pain were found to be deficient in vitamin D.

Magnesium deficiency is highly misdiagnosed (when tested which is not common) due to only 1% of magnesium in the blood and 0.3% in blood serum. A better test is the RBC magnesium which should be at the top of the reference range. The best way to see if you are deficient however is to supplement with magnesium for a few months.

You definitely have inflammation inside your body and the high counts for the first 3 indicate some kind of infection. People with lupus usually have low white cells and neutrophils. You might ask your doctor about a referral to a rheumatologist.

I had typed you a rather lengthy and informative response… and when I tried to send it, Yahoo decided it was unavailable at that moment and apparently ate the message. I don’t see it showing up but will check back later on to be sure. To summarize the most important part of what I wanted to say, even a negative lab result does not rule out the possibility of Lupus. It’s very hard to diagnose SLE. I hope you do not have Lupus (I do), but try not to be discouraged by the sometimes confusing turns of bloodwork when it comes to autoimmune questions. I’ll get back to you on this later with the rest.
