Female Thinning Hair
Female Thinning Hair

Hormones have a lot to do with it. Not surprised by that are you!
When the hormone progesterone levels fall as a result of lack of ovulation, the body responds by increasing
its production of the adrenal cortical steroid, androstenedione.
Androstenedione conveys some androgenic properties, in this case, male pattern thinning hair. When
progesterone levels are raised by natural progesterone supplements, the androstenedione level will
gradually fall, and your normal hair growth will eventually resume.
Since hair growth is a slow process, it may take four to six months for the effects to become apparent.
These treatments do not work over night and needs time before you can fully see any results.
Other Common Causes of Hair Loss
1. Childbirth, some women lose large amounts of hair within two to three months after delivery.
2. Alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is a condition in which thinning hair occurs only in certain areas,
resulting in hairless patches the size of a coin or larger.
3. Thyroid disease. An overactive or under active thyroid can cause thinning hair.
4. Ringworm. If this fungal infection occurs on your scalp, it can cause small patches of scaling skin and
some thinning hair.
Other Realities Causing Female Thinning Hair
Avoid chlorinated water on your hair. A shower filter is more important than a drinking water filter. And
cut down on the number of times you wash your hair. You may not like this but; once every 5-10 days is
ideal for healthy hair.
Female pattern thinning hair may begin as early as puberty. In these cases if there are signs of hormone
imbalance, such as excess facial or body hair, a hormone evaluation should be done. Hormonal changes are
a common cause of female thinning hair.
Thinning Hair Affects Self Image
Thinning hair can make a woman feel less feminine and can cause depression and even anxiety. Since a lot
of the information and treatments are mostly aimed at men, until now, women had fewer choices. Some tips
as below:
1. Cut your hair in short layers. Shorter, layered hair adds fullness and body
2. Don’t use combs, but soft brushes and try to avoid things like hair spray. Using a good mousse or soft
gel after washing can give your hair additional body without harming the hair.
3. Switch or alternate shampoos every other month or so.
