bald spot on my mouse?

pynki asked:

I own two small, black, female mice. They are probably about 5 months old (pet store purchased). Recently, I noticed that one of them is balding on the crown of her head…right now it is still thinning right there, but it is getting worse, and will probably be bald soon. It is confined to a circle, but the hair hasn’t been lost in any pattern (i.e. from the center outwards), so I don’t think it’s a ring worm fungus. The other mouse is showing no signs of hair loss, they share a tank, and there is otherwise no odd behavior. We live in a basement apartment and still get occasional wild meeses in when it gets cold–but of course they can’t have physical contact with mine, so if they caught something from one of them it would need to be airborne.

If anybody has an idea what this might be, I would appreciate help that might keep me from taking a costly trip to the vet. Thanks in advance.

Could be mites, lice, an allergy or even barbering (excessive grooming). This site might help: When in doubt, seek a vet. Good luck.
